➭Overview of the Program
In the era of information and photonics, light has become not only a medium for communication but also a carrier of information and computation. Optical information processing, bridging classical optics with modern signal theory, plays a transformative role in today’s intelligent and interconnected world. From advanced imaging and holography to optical computing and metasurface design, this field integrates physics, mathematics, and engineering to explore how light can analyze, transmit, and manipulate information at unprecedented speeds and scales.
This international program offers graduate students a comprehensive understanding of optical information processing through both theoretical and experimental perspectives. The course combines Fourier optics, diffraction theory, and linear systems with hands-on MATLAB modeling and laboratory research rotations. Students will learn how to model and analyze optical systems using transfer functions, design spatial filters and holograms, and explore advanced imaging and phase retrieval techniques.
Beyond technical mastery, the program encourages critical thinking and creativity. Through discussions of historical breakthroughs, case studies in modern optical research, and engagement with national and international developments, students gain not only scientific competence but also a broader vision of optics as a driver of technological and societal progress.
Ultimately, this course serves as a cross-cultural bridge between Chinese and international optical education. It prepares students to participate in global research collaborations and equips them to contribute to the next generation of optical and photonic innovations—where information, computation, and light converge to redefine the boundaries of science and technology.
➭Introduction of the Host
This program is hosted by HUST School of Optical and Electronic Information (SOEI). The history of the School of Optical and Electronic Information (SOEI) can be traced back to the Optical Instrument Teaching and Research Group and Laser Research Group of the Department of Mechanics 1 established by the Huazhong Institute of Technology (now the Huazhong University of Science and Technology) in 1970. The school started the professional development of laser and optoelectronics earlier in China.
The school actively serves the national strategy and regional economic and social development, and plays an important supporting role in the cultivation of optoelectronic information talents and the transformation of scientific and technological achievements in “Optics Valley of China, Wuhan”. After more than half a century of development, the School of Optical and Electronic Information has become a well-known domestic optoelectronic talent training cradle.
